Chapelle Saint-Gabriel de Tarascon, Romanesque chapel in Tarascon, France

Chapelle Saint-Gabriel de Tarascon is a Romanesque chapel standing in an olive grove southeast of Tarascon, near Saint-Étienne-du-Grès. Its west facade has a round-arched recess containing a portal framed by two Corinthian columns and a triangular pediment with an Agnus Dei, all beneath a large relieving arch and an oculus with the four Evangelist symbols. The single nave has three bays and a slightly pointed barrel vault; the floor rises toward the choir because of the slope.

A predecessor building is first documented in 858; the present chapel dates from the second half of the 12th century, probably around 1175. Its sculpture is linked to the north gallery of the Saint-Trophime cloister in Arles (about 1170) and the west portal of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux (about 1180). Prosper Mérimée had it listed among the first French monuments historiques in 1840.

The west facade carries a carved frieze with the Annunciation and the Visitation in the triangular pediment, Daniel in the lions' den and the Fall in the tympanum, and the four Evangelists' symbols around the oculus. A cippus inside the chapel bears the epitaph of Marcus Frontonius Euporus, a barge master and patron of the utricularii of Ernaginum.

The chapel stands in open fields on a slope in a small olive grove, at the junction of the D 570n with the D 970, D 32 and D 33 roads, southeast of Tarascon and west of Saint-Étienne-du-Grès. It is reached along the Fontvieille road; the ground rises toward the building, and the interior floor climbs toward the choir because of the slope. The walls are 1.20 metres thick, with buttresses marking the vault lines outside.

The chapel stands at the site of Ernaginum, where the Via Domitia, Via Aurelia and Via Agrippa met in Roman times. A funerary cippus inside the church commemorates Marcus Frontonius Euporus, a barge-master and patron of the utricularii, the raftmen who ferried goods across the marsh on inflated skins.
