Château de Libouriac

Château de Libouriac in Béziers is a manor house from the late 1800s built with a blend of neo-gothic and neo-renaissance architectural styles. Inside, the spacious hall features a gallery level with a central staircase illuminated by stained glass windows.

The building was constructed between 1883 and 1885 by architect Louis Garros and replaced an earlier fortress on the site. The previous structure had been owned by the Gayon and Dom Bédos de Celles families.

The castle represents the architectural preferences of 19th-century French bourgeoisie, with its grand design reflecting the wine-growing wealth of the Gaujal and Lagarrigue families.

The entire estate including the castle, chapel, outbuildings, and grounds received protected monument status in 1995. Since it remains privately owned, visitors should plan to view the property from a distance or through scheduled openings.

Shortly after its completion, the castle became energy independent through its own electricity generation system. This technological solution was remarkably advanced for the 1880s.
