Murol Castle

Murol Castle sits on a basalt rock in the Auvergne region at high elevation, with thick defensive walls that shaped its appearance. The fortress occupies a dramatic position overlooking the surrounding landscape.

The fortress began as an 11th-century stronghold and was later reinforced during the medieval conflicts that shaped the region. Its owners expanded and modified it over centuries to maintain defensive strength.

The castle preserves two registers containing poems, personal memories, and an autobiographical will from Guillaume II de Murol from the medieval period.

The site is accessible on foot via a regular path leading to the top of the basalt rock. Good footwear is helpful because the surfaces are uneven and can be slippery when wet.

The fortress maintains detailed accounts from 600 years ago, documenting the daily operations and life within its walls during the 15th century.
