Canal du Centre

The Canal du Centre is a waterway extending across a long distance through Burgundy, connecting two major rivers and enabling boat travel between them. The system operates through numerous locks that raise and lower vessels to navigate the changing landscape.

Construction began in the late 1700s under the direction of an engineer and created the first connection allowing ships to travel from northern to southern France. This achievement was a crucial step for moving goods and developing the region's economy.

The waterway passes through renowned wine regions where visitors walking along its banks can spot vineyards and local producers working the land. The communities here maintain strong ties to both water transport and viticulture as central parts of their daily life.

Visitors can explore in several ways: on foot or by bike along the banks, by boat if you arrange passage, or simply from bridges and viewpoints. The best time to visit is spring through fall when the weather is pleasant.

At one location, a particularly deep lock was built to replace three older locks and make passage easier for larger vessels. This engineering solution shows how the system was continually improved over time to handle changing needs.
