Canche, River in Pas-de-Calais, France
The Canche is a river flowing through the Pas-de-Calais region, stretching roughly 100 kilometers from Gouy-en-Ternois to its mouth at the English Channel. It passes through Hesdin and Montreuil-sur-Mer before emptying between Étaples and Le Touquet-Paris-Plage.
Communities in the valley date back to ancient times, when inhabitants first developed drainage systems to manage the land. For centuries, fishing, farming, and reed cutting formed the economic foundation of life along the river.
The river connects several towns where fishing and crafts have long been woven into local life. Small museums and community initiatives along the towns keep these traditions visible and part of how people relate to the water.
Walking paths run along much of the river and allow visitors to explore at their own pace through the valley. Comfortable shoes and flexible timing help make the best of the varying conditions along the route.
The estuary gained protected status in 1976 and is home to around 75 bird species that stop here to feed or rest. The natural sandbars that form with the tides have shaped the coastline between the two seaside towns.
