Ruscino

Ruscino is an excavated ancient city in Perpignan that displays ruins of homes, fortification walls, and numerous objects spanning pre-Roman and Roman times. The recovered items come from different periods and provide insight into the daily life and layout of this early settlement.

The settlement was founded in ancient times and grew into a major center so important that it shaped the name of the entire Roussillon region. It was later occupied by Romans and remained inhabited for several centuries before eventually being abandoned.

Artifacts found here show how people lived and worked across many centuries at this location. Pottery, tools, and written records reveal that this was an important hub for trade and craft production.

The site can be visited on most weekdays and offers a good overview of the archaeological structures present. Guided tours can be arranged in advance and help visitors better understand the excavations and their significance.

A discovered lead letter directly documents ancient wine production and trade activities at this location. This rare written evidence shows that the area was producing wine thousands of years ago.
