Col d'Aubisque, Mountain pass in Béost, France
Col d'Aubisque is a mountain pass in the Pyrenees at 1,709 meters elevation, connecting the Ossau Valley with the Argelès-Gazost Valley. A winding road crosses the summit, providing access to hiking trails and the nearby Gourette ski resort.
The mountain road was built in the 19th century at the request of Empress Eugénie to connect the spa towns of Eaux-Bonnes and Argelès-Gazost. This route became a key link between the region's thermal centers.
Three large bicycle sculptures in Tour de France colors - yellow, polka dot, and green - line the road to the summit. They reflect the cycling heritage that defines this mountain crossing.
The pass is typically open to traffic from late May through mid-November and provides access to hiking and cycling routes. Check weather conditions before visiting, as snow and fog can occasionally make the road impassable.
The climb from Laruns is one of Europe's most famous cycling challenges and regularly features in the Tour de France. The combination of distance and gradient creates a demanding ascent that attracts cyclists from around the world.
