Hôtel-Dieu de Paris, Hospital facility next to Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France
The Hôtel-Dieu de Paris is a hospital complex situated beside Notre-Dame Cathedral on Île de la Cité. It extends along the northern side of the Parvis Notre-Dame square with a central courtyard and classical architectural elements from the 19th century.
Saint Landry founded this medical institution in 651, making it the oldest hospital in continuous operation. The current building dates from 1867 and replaced earlier medieval structures.
The institution preserves its role as a place of healing and knowledge transmission. Visitors can observe how the building continues to serve patients while functioning as a teaching facility for medical students.
Visitors can access the central courtyard through a blue door near Point Zero, which marks the center of Paris measurements. The entrance is open daily and requires no admission fee.
The facility houses specialized departments for ophthalmology and diabetes treatment, playing an important role in medical care for central Paris. These specialties have been established within the facility for many years.
