Fort of Planoise, Military fortification on Planoise hill in Besançon, France.
Fort of Planoise is a military fortification built on a hill east of Besançon at roughly 490 meters elevation. The installation spans a plateau and contains several batteries, ammunition magazines, and gun emplacements designed to defend the city and its key transport routes.
Construction started in 1877 and finished in 1882 when France was reinforcing its eastern borders following a military conflict. The structure was built as part of a larger strategic system to safeguard border regions against potential attacks.
The fort was built as part of a network meant to protect the city and its river crossings. Today you can walk around the slopes and see how the structures were integrated into the surrounding terrain.
Several walking paths climb the hill and the area is accessible year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions. Sturdy shoes are recommended since trails can be uneven, and bringing water and snacks helps make the walk more comfortable.
The fort was named after Marshal Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey, a French military commander born in 1754 who served until 1842. His career spanned several of France's wars and left a lasting mark on this important defensive structure.
