Place des Quinconces

This public square lies next to the Garonne River and features two tall columns with sculptural elements and water fountains throughout. The arrangement of trees and pathways creates a geometric layout across the entire space.

The square came into being in 1820 on land where a former fortress once stood. Trees were planted in a regular pattern, and this geometric arrangement is what gave the place its name.

During World War II, local people hid the monument's bronze parts from German forces to protect them. This secret effort meant the sculptures could be restored and brought back later.
