Abbey of Froidmont, Cistercian abbey in Hermes, France

The Abbey of Froidmont is a Cistercian monastery near the Hez-Froidmont forest with surviving farm buildings, a porch, and a medieval boundary wall. The site displays typical features of a monastic complex arranged for the daily work and needs of the community.

Founded in 1134 by Alix of Achy and Bulles following her husband's death, the monastery received its first community of monks from Notre-Dame d'Ourscamp. After the French Revolution in 1791, most buildings were sold and demolished, with only a few structures remaining.

The poet Helinand lived here as a monk between 1194 and 1197 and created his famous Verses of Death. His literary work shows the role that intellectual and artistic pursuits held in monastic life.

The site is accessible on foot and offers a clear view of the remaining buildings such as farm barns and a dovecote. Visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and should wear weather-appropriate clothing, as much of the property lies in the open air.

The boundary wall from the 12th century survives in its original condition and shows how monks enclosed their lands with sturdy stone structures. This wall is a rare example of early medieval construction techniques visible in only a few other locations.
