Horsa Bridge, Military bridge in Ranville, France

The Horsa Bridge crosses the Orne River with a steel structure that replaced the original rotating bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel workshops in 1870.

British airborne forces captured this strategic crossing point during Operation Tonga on June 6, 1944, preventing German tanks from reaching the Normandy landing zones.

A memorial plaque installed in 1989 commemorates the Horsa glider pilots and platoons who seized the bridge before the Normandy beach landings began.

The bridge connects the eastern bank of the Orne River to the village of Ranville, located 400 meters east of the Pegasus Bridge site.

The original rotating steel truss bridge components remain visible in the current structure, maintaining a connection to its engineering heritage from 1870.
