Café Gondrée

Café Gondrée is a traditional stone building at the western end of the Caen Canal, located near Pegasus Bridge. Its interior displays military equipment, photographs, and personal items that document the liberation.

British paratroopers from the 6th Airborne Division entered the building on June 6, 1944, making it the first French house liberated during the D-Day operation. This event established its lasting role in remembering the Normandy campaign.

The café has served as a gathering place where visitors encounter personal stories of liberation and survival shared by those who lived through the event. The space reflects how ordinary families became part of military history and continues to mark this connection for new generations.

The building is located on Avenue du Commandant-Kieffer and is easy to reach when visiting Pegasus Bridge. Visitors should allow time to view the displays and speak with those who can share memories of the event.

Arlette Gondrée, who experienced the liberation as a young child, managed the café throughout her life and welcomed countless veterans. Her personal story bridges the perspective of a child with the experiences of soldiers.
