Château de Châteauneuf, Medieval fortress in Châteauneuf, France
The castle stands on a limestone spur 475 meters above the Burgundy plains, measuring 75 meters in length and 35 meters in width.
Construction began in 1132 under Jean de Chaudenay, and the fortress received substantial fortifications during the Hundred Years' War to enhance its defensive capabilities.
Philippe Pot transformed the military structure into an elegant residence in 1457, adding a chapel and living quarters in the Flamboyant Gothic architectural style.
The castle remains open for visits throughout the year, with guided tours available in multiple languages to explore the medieval architecture and gardens.
During World War II, the castle served as a secure storage facility for valuable artworks from the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts.
