Château de Châteauneuf, Medieval fortress in Châteauneuf, France
Château de Châteauneuf is a medieval fortress in a Burgundy village, standing on a limestone hilltop with sweeping views over the plains. The complex features older defensive structures with thick walls on the eastern side and lighter residential buildings on the western side, where living quarters and a chapel were later added.
The site originated in the 12th century when a defensive structure was built on this strategic hilltop. During the 15th century, it was converted into a residence with improved living spaces, marking the end of its role as a purely military outpost.
The place takes its name from this fortress, which has shaped the settlement for centuries. Visitors can observe how the building continues to define the village's identity and commands views from every direction.
The site is easily accessible from the surrounding paths and offers clear views of the landscape from above. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended, as the approach involves uneven paths and slopes.
During World War II, the fortress served as a hiding place for valuable artworks from a nearby museum. These sheltered treasures played a role in efforts to protect French cultural heritage during the occupation.
