Abbaye de La Chalade

Abbaye de La Chalade is an abbey in the Biesme Valley featuring medieval architecture with sandstone walls and detailed stone work. The western entrance displays a distinctive circular window dating to the 15th century.

Two Benedictine monks established this abbey in the early 12th century as a center for religious life and regional growth. The community expanded over decades through outside support and economic activities in the surrounding lands.

The monks operated workshops and production sites throughout the valley, shaping how local communities developed their own trades and crafts. This religious community became deeply woven into the daily working life of the region.
