Ganagobie Abbey, Romanesque abbey in Ganagobie, France
The abbey stands on an elevated plateau, featuring rounded arches, thick stone walls, and cloisters that exemplify medieval religious architecture in Provence.
Founded in the tenth century and initially owned by the Bishops of Sisteron, the abbey was donated to Cluny in 956 before facing destruction during the French Revolution.
The monastery maintains Benedictine traditions through daily religious services and Gregorian chants, continuing centuries of spiritual practices in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region.
Visitors can access the church between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM, with additional morning hours from 10:30 AM to 11:45 AM during summer months.
The monastery contains medieval mosaics discovered in 1898, and houses religious artifacts from the 12th century, including a Carolingian sarcophagus lid.
