Chapel of Notre Dame des Anges, Gothic chapel in Lurs, France
Chapel of Notre Dame des Anges is a Gothic sanctuary featuring a central nave with a barrel vault and six side chapels distributed along the interior. A square bell tower marks the corner near the choir, while the interior houses painted religious artwork and decorative elements.
The current structure was built between 1661 and 1674, replacing an earlier medieval sanctuary that existed since the 12th century. This reconstruction reflected the religious revival and architectural changes taking place across Provence during that period.
The chapel served as a pilgrimage destination for local believers throughout the centuries, drawing visitors seeking spiritual help. The sanctuary remains deeply rooted in the daily religious life of surrounding villages.
The chapel sits along the historic route between Sisteron and Apt in the Lauzon Valley, surrounded by mulberry and chestnut groves. Walking shoes are recommended as the terrain around the sanctuary is hilly and uneven.
Inside, a raised altar platform with two side staircases leads to the Chapel of Miracles, where a painting of the Virgin hangs. This hidden arrangement surprises many visitors and creates a sense of discovering different levels within the sanctuary.
