Montpellier tramway, Modern tram system in Montpellier, France.
The Montpellier tramway is a transport system in Montpellier, France, that connects major city districts with four lines. The tracks run through main streets and squares, with many stops featuring modern shelters equipped with seating and information boards.
After the city closed its original electric tram network in 1949, construction of a new system began in the late 1990s. The first modern line opened on June 30, 2000, and additional lines followed in subsequent years.
The tram connects residential neighborhoods with universities and shopping streets, allowing students and locals to move across town without a car. Each carriage displays colorful patterns and symbols on the exterior that vary by line.
The tram runs daily from early morning until late evening, with trains coming more frequently during rush hours. All trains are accessible for wheelchairs, featuring low floors, ramps and dedicated space.
Since 2023, all residents of the metropolitan area can ride the tram without paying, regardless of where they go or how many times they transfer. This policy applies to residents with a registered address in the transport zone and requires proof when boarding.
