Place Kléber, Central square in Strasbourg, France
Place Kléber is a large public square in central Strasbourg, surrounded by buildings of different architectural styles and lined with shops. Its paved surface connects several shopping streets and serves as a central gathering point in the historic city center.
The square received its current name in 1840 to honor General Jean-Baptiste Kléber, a native of Strasbourg. Before this, the space went by different names and witnessed important moments in the city's history.
The Aubette building on the north side displays interior spaces designed in 1928 by Jean Arp, Theo van Doesburg, and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. These rooms reflect the artistic movements that shaped Europe during that era.
The square is easy to reach and serves as a good starting point for exploring the downtown area. From here, you can easily walk to other interesting spots and shopping streets.
A vault beneath the central statue holds the remains of General Kléber, who was assassinated in Cairo in 1800. His body was later brought back and laid to rest in his hometown.
