Auberive Abbey, Cistercian abbey in Auberive, France
Auberive Abbey is a Cistercian monastery in the village of Auberive featuring a church with a flat-walled chevet and separate sections for choir-monks and lay-brothers. The complex includes a communal north wing that contained spaces for various monastic activities and daily life.
The abbey was founded in 1135 by twelve monks who came from Clairvaux Abbey. By the 13th century, the monastic community had expanded its holdings to include numerous buildings and facilities across the surrounding territory.
The abbey now serves as a Contemporary Art Center, displaying works by figurative expressionist and singular artists to visitors. These exhibitions take place within the historic spaces, creating a dialogue between modern art and the monastic setting.
Visits require advance scheduling to join a guided tour of the property. Check opening times before planning your visit, as seasonal variations apply throughout the year.
The monks diverted the Aube River by roughly one kilometer to construct an intricate system of canals for water management. This engineering feat directly supported the monastery's agricultural operations and water needs.
