Notre-Dame de Bellaigue, Romanesque abbey in Virlet, France
The Notre-Dame de Bellaigue abbey features a granite church with a semicircular apse, three round-arched windows, and a quadrangular bell tower in the north transept.
Founded as a Benedictine priory in 950, the site transformed into a Cistercian abbey in 1137 when monks from Montpeyroux established their presence.
The abbey church contains decorated glazed tiles discovered during excavations, displaying medieval artistic elements such as griffins and Saint Andrew's crosses.
Located 200 meters north of Virlet and 25 kilometers south of Montluçon, the abbey receives visitors who can contact them at +33 4 73 52 33 26.
After extensive restoration between 1986 and 2000, four Brazilian Benedictine monks reestablished the monastic community, which grew to 31 members by 2016.
