Château de Savigny-lès-Beaune is a castle with classic medieval architecture, fortified towers with machicolation remnants, set on a 12-hectare (30-acre) estate crossed by a river. The structure combines defensive features with extensive grounds that include various buildings and outbuildings.
The castle was built in 1340 by Jean de Frolois, Marshal of Burgundy, for Duke Eudes IV, but was destroyed in 1478 during the Burgundian succession war. After this destruction, it was rebuilt and has since undergone various modifications and changes in use.
The castle now contains unusual museum collections with race cars, fighter planes, motorcycles, tractors, and fire trucks displayed within its medieval walls. This vehicle collection creates an interesting contrast between the historic architecture and modern machinery.
Access to the grounds is relatively open, with different areas to explore on foot across the 12-hectare property. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and allow plenty of time to view the various buildings and collections.
The property holds the world's largest private collection of fighter aircraft, with over 100 military planes and helicopters on display in and around the historic buildings.
