Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery

This military cemetery contains more than 14000 American military graves spread across about 130 acres near Romagne-sous-Montfaucon. The graves are arranged in neat rows that lead toward a central reflection pool and a chapel positioned on a ridge.

The cemetery was founded in October 1918, shortly after the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the largest battle involving American troops in World War I. It honors the soldiers who died during these intense battles in the region.

The chapel displays stained glass windows showing American military insignias and bronze panels, while memorial halls contain operation maps. These artistic elements help visitors understand the sacrifice made and honor those who died during the fighting.

The cemetery is open daily, and visitors can walk comfortably along the maintained paths between the graves. It is best visited during daytime hours to fully appreciate the chapel and the reflective spaces throughout the grounds.

The cemetery displays tablets listing 954 missing soldiers, with rosettes marking those whose remains were later identified and brought back for burial. This reflects the ongoing effort to honor those unaccounted for and give them proper resting places.
