Château de l'Empéri

The Chateau de l'Emperi is a stone fortress built on a rocky hilltop above the Crau plain, featuring multiple courtyards, terraces, and fortifications constructed over many centuries. The complex combines residential and defensive structures into one integrated site.

The fortress began as a residence for bishops of the Arles diocese until 1792. The French Revolution brought a major shift when the site became military barracks and a detention facility.

The museum displays a collection of military objects including uniforms and weapons spanning several centuries. These items tell the story of how this fortress played a role in European conflicts.

The site is reached by climbing a series of steps leading to the hilltop location. Comfortable shoes are recommended due to steep pathways and uneven ground throughout.

The garden grows plants that Nostradamus, the famous astrologer, used in his remedies. These plants are arranged in beds bordered by branches that reference his written works.
