Salon-de-Provence, Medieval commune in Bouches-du-Rhône, France
Salon-de-Provence is a town in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in Provence, located at the edge of the flat plain of Crau. The center clusters around a hill with medieval streets and Provençal houses with ochre facades.
The castle was built in the 10th century and served for centuries as the residence of the archbishops of Arles. In the 16th century, the town experienced prosperity through trade and crafts, particularly with soap making.
Nostradamus, the famous seer, lived here in the 16th century, and his house can be visited today. The town maintains his memory with a dedicated monument and attracts visitors interested in his prophecies.
The old town is best explored on foot, as many streets are not suitable for cars. The climb to the castle is worth the effort for the view over the surrounding plains and hills.
Since 1964, the base of the Patrouille de France has been located here, regularly visible during training flights over the town. The pilots practice their aerobatic maneuvers in the sky above Provence, which observers on the ground can watch.
