Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence, Administrative territory in southeastern France.
Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence is an administrative territory in southeastern France spanning parts of Bouches-du-Rhône, Var, and Vaucluse departments. It connects the city of Marseille with the historic town of Aix-en-Provence and 90 smaller communities stretching from the Mediterranean coast to inland valleys.
The metropolitan area formed in 2016 when six local government associations merged into a single structure with headquarters in Marseille. This reform created the largest territorial administrative unit in France and brought together coastal cities with inland communities under one roof.
Each municipality within the metropolitan area maintains its individual character while contributing to regional initiatives through festivals, museums, and artistic events throughout the year.
Individual towns within this administrative structure maintain their own town halls and local services, so everyday matters are still handled at the community level. Visitors will find public transport linking several cities and shared information points for regional projects.
The administration operates with six territorial councils that each represent former community associations and preserve local identity within the larger unit. Each council addresses specific concerns for its zone and brings decisions forward to the central administration.
