Vauvenargues, Mountain commune in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Vauvenargues is a commune in Provence that stretches across the foothills of Mount Sainte-Victoire. The territory features thick woodlands and Mediterranean plants growing near Aix-en-Provence.

A 14th-century castle with two round towers once served as a residence for the archbishops of Aix-en-Provence. King Louis XIV later granted the building to Joseph de Clapiers.

The village keeps local traditions alive through its weekly Friday market and craft events throughout the year. These gatherings showcase regional produce and traditional skills passed down by residents.

The area offers marked hiking routes for visitors wanting to explore the landscape. Access to the mountain slopes is limited during summer months due to fire prevention measures.

The famous artist Pablo Picasso bought the local castle in 1958 as his final home. He was buried there and rests alongside his second wife Jacqueline.
