Lac de Bimont, Artificial reservoir in Saint-Marc-Jaumegarde, France.

Lac de Bimont is an artificial lake in Saint-Marc-Jaumegarde that sits like a quiet water mirror in the Provençal countryside. The reservoir's waters are surrounded by forested slopes, with different views of the surrounding mountains visible from various points along the shoreline.

The lake came into being after 1946, when engineers began building a dam to store water in the region. Completion followed within a few years, creating a body of water that has shaped local water management ever since.

The reservoir forms part of the Canal de Provence network, managed by Societe du Canal de Provence to distribute water throughout the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

The shoreline is reached via walking paths that depart from a parking area near the dam and lead through the surroundings. The best access is on the dam side, from where you can explore paths along the water's edge.

The water is fed by two rivers flowing from different directions that converge to fill the basin. This water source makes the lake an important junction in the regional water system.

The large lakes of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region has many lakes spreading from the Southern Alps to the Verdon gorge. Serre-Ponçon Lake covers about 28 km² and features sandy beaches and small coves tucked between forests. Sainte-Croix Lake is France's third-largest lake. High-altitude lakes like Allos and Sainte-Anne sit above 2,400 meters (7,874 feet) and offer cool, clear water surrounded by mountain peaks. Berre Pond is the region's biggest saltwater body. These lakes, both natural and human-made, provide space for swimming, kayaking, and paddling. Visitors find trails around the shorelines where they can walk at their own pace, spot local birds and fish, and soak in the surrounding landscape. Some lakes sit in wide, sunny valleys, while others nestle in high mountain basins with dramatic slopes nearby. These waters are easy to reach and offer something for everyone. You can visit a small quiet lake for an afternoon or spend days exploring larger ones. The region's lakes reflect the seasons, from warm summer swimming to crisp autumn walks along the water's edge.
