Château of Vauvenargues

Château of Vauvenargues, 18th century castle in Vauvenargues, France

Château of Vauvenargues is a castle at the base of Montagne Sainte-Victoire, featuring stone walls, multiple towers, and large terraces overlooking the Provence landscape. The building spans several levels and contains different rooms, some of which visitors can explore.

The castle was originally a stronghold of the Counts of Provence and became property of the Archbishops of Aix in the 13th century. This change of ownership shaped the site's development and use over subsequent centuries.

Picasso purchased the castle in 1958 and converted several rooms into art studios where he created numerous paintings during his residence. The connection to this artistic period shapes how people experience the place today.

Visits take place between April and October and require advance reservation for guided tours. It is helpful to check opening times beforehand and plan your visit accordingly.

Both Picasso and his wife Jacqueline are buried within the castle grounds, marking their lasting connection to this place. This burial makes the castle a significant location for those interested in his life and work.
