Carrières des Lumières

Carrières des Lumières is an art center inside a former limestone quarry where digital artworks are projected onto rock walls. The space covers roughly 7,000 square meters of exhibition surface with chambers reaching about 14 meters high.

The quarry was originally used to extract building stone and was later converted into an art venue. This transformation took place in 2012, bringing a completely new purpose to the underground space.

The center displays works from artists like Monet and Van Gogh through projections on natural stone surfaces. Visitors experience how classical paintings come alive through light and music, transforming the entire space.

The location is underground, so temperatures remain cool and stable throughout the year. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket, as pathways go over rocky ground.

The rough limestone surface redirects and breaks the projected light in unexpected ways, creating spatial depth effects. This natural quality of the rock walls produces visual results that flat screens cannot achieve.
