Mallemort, commune in Bouches-du-Rhône, France
Mallemort is a small village near the Durance River with narrow stone streets and simple buildings clustered around a hilltop. The Church of Saint-Michel with its tall bell tower and the ruins of a medieval castle on the hill define the townscape, while a large stone arch bridge from the 1800s crosses the river.
The village dates to medieval times when it was called Castro Malemortis and ruled by the bishops of Marseille. A knightly order called the Hospitaliers built a guardhouse on the hill above the river in the 12th century to control the important crossing of the Durance.
Mallemort carries the traces of its medieval name Castro Malemortis in its layout and buildings today. The narrow stone streets and regular Friday market show how locals still gather to buy fresh produce and meet, keeping alive the rhythm of village life that has defined this place for centuries.
The village is easy to explore on foot, with paved paths through old streets and steps leading up to the castle grounds. Visiting the church and bridge is free, and the weekly Friday market is a good time to explore the area and discover local products.
A large golf course called Domaine de Pont Royal was designed in 1991 by famous golfer Severiano Ballesteros on historic grounds that once held a medieval mill complex. This 18-hole course attracts international visitors and is known for hosting a prestigious annual golf tournament.
