Château Levat

Château Levat is a manor house in Montpellier featuring a symmetrical facade with eight window openings per floor and three central arched French windows. The roof is covered with curved tiles that give the building its distinctive appearance.

Jean David Levat, a merchant from Montpellier, commissioned this building between 1763 and 1764, marking the rise of merchant residences in the city. This period reflected the growing prosperity and social ascent of the trading elite during the 18th century.

The reception rooms showcase ornate plasterwork and door panels illustrating scenes from La Fontaine's Fables. These decorations reflect the taste of wealthy merchants who expressed their refinement through such literary motifs in their homes.

The building is located on Avenue Saint-Lazare and has housed an architectural firm since 2022. Public visits are not possible as it functions as a private office building.

The side terraces and wrought iron railings received heritage protection status in 1944 as historical monuments. This designation made the property an early example of protecting garden elements and metalwork as cultural heritage.
