Glacier du Tour

The Tour Glacier extends over 5.3 kilometers with a surface area of 8 square kilometers, featuring a terminal tongue below a vast glacial plateau.

On August 14, 1949, the glacier experienced a catastrophic event when three million cubic meters of ice collapsed, resulting in six casualties beneath the suspended glacier.

The glacier serves as a research location for scientists studying climate patterns, ice movement, and environmental changes in the Mont Blanc massif region.

The glacier front sits at 2,150 meters altitude and maintains an estimated flow rate of 240 meters per year, with summer access through marked hiking paths.

The terminal section descends an 800-meter rock slope, which during the Little Ice Age period was completely covered by the glacier mass.
