Le Portalet, Mountain summit in Orsières, Switzerland
Le Portalet is a summit in the Mont Blanc massif positioned between the Trient and Saleina glaciers in Valais. The peak is surrounded by rock faces and snow fields, with multiple climbing routes of varying difficulty grades.
The summit gained attention in 2001 when Didier Berthod and François Mathey established a 45-meter climbing route featuring a natural crack formation. This first ascent brought recognition to the site among technical climbers.
The Cabane de Orny serves as a meeting point where climbers gather to share stories and prepare for their ascents. These gatherings create a strong sense of community among people drawn to this remote mountain terrain.
Access to the summit typically starts from the Cabane de Orny, where multiple routes depart with varying technical demands. Weather conditions at altitude can change rapidly, so timing and preparation are important considerations.
The summit is flanked by two distinctive subsidiary peaks: the Grand Clocher and the needle-shaped Petit Clocher. These companions create a memorable outline that is recognizable from neighboring valleys.
