Foissac Cave, Prehistoric cave in Foissac, France.
Foissac Cave is a limestone cave south of the village with underground water flows and mineral deposits throughout its passages. The chambers hold archaeological remains from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, including approximately 60 burial sites.
A rockslide sealed the entrance about 5000 years ago, trapping artifacts and remains inside. This natural closure preserved everything within, protecting tools, pottery, and other objects from damage or removal.
The site shows traces of how people lived and buried their dead in prehistoric times, visible in what remains within the chambers. Visitors can observe the layout of these burial areas as they walk through.
Wear sturdy footwear as passages can be wet and slippery from underground water. Guided tours are the only way to enter, and small group sizes make it easier to see details and navigate the narrow sections.
The cave contains ancient clay quarries from the Neolithic period, showing how people extracted materials for their needs. It is the only decorated cave found in the entire Aveyron region.
