Château de Mesnières-en-Bray, Renaissance castle in Mesnières-en-Bray, France.
Château de Mesnières-en-Bray is a Renaissance structure designed with symmetrical proportions and four corner towers, featuring refined decorative detailing on its stone facade and window treatments. The building displays the careful craftsmanship typical of its period through carved stonework and architectural ornaments that define its appearance.
Built between 1521 and 1546 by Charles de Boissay, the castle replaced an earlier wooden fortress that had guarded an ancient Roman road. This transition from timber to stone construction reflected changing needs and power structures of the Renaissance period.
The castle now serves as an educational institution focused on horticulture and forestry training. Visitors can observe how the historic building continues to function for its communities while maintaining connections to its past.
The castle opens for guided visits from Easter through All Saints' Day, with daily tours available during summer months between 2:30 PM and 6:30 PM. Visitors should be prepared for uneven floors and historic interiors, and the tour includes access to the deer gallery and chapel.
A major fire in 2004 caused severe damage to the roof and chapel areas, but comprehensive restoration completed by 2014 brought the entire structure back to its current state. This recovery demonstrates the extent of dedication required to preserve such historic buildings.
