Château d'Assier

Château d'Assier is a Renaissance castle featuring four corner towers and classical architectural elements with military influences throughout. The building structure blends traditional defensive features with the refined decorative styles of the Renaissance.

A high-ranking military officer under King François I commissioned the castle between 1518 and 1535. The construction took place during a period when France was embracing new artistic and architectural trends from Italy.

The rooms inside display weapons and decorative elements that show the owner's military accomplishments. This arrangement reflects how wealthy aristocratic families expressed their power through their homes.

The castle is managed by a public institution and offers guided tours. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and note that there is also a dovecote on the grounds worth seeing.

A separate dovecote from 1537 contains around 2500 barrel-shaped nesting boxes accessible via a rotating ladder. This system was a practical solution for raising many birds while saving space.
