Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption d'Anzy-le-Duc, Romanesque church in Anzy-le-Duc, France

The Eglise Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Anzy-le-Duc is a Romanesque church built with an imposing octagonal bell tower rising above the main structure. The tower features paired arched windows separated by slender columns across its three tiers, decorated with Lombard bands that run horizontally around each level.

Construction of this church began between the late 11th and early 12th centuries during a period of widespread Romanesque building in France. It received classification as a historical monument in 1851, formally recognizing its architectural and cultural importance.

The west doorway displays finely carved Biblical scenes, including Christ in Majesty and the Ascension sculpted in the tympanum above. Visitors encounter these skillful carvings immediately upon approaching the entrance.

The church is open to visitors wishing to explore its Romanesque architectural details and remains active for religious services. It is helpful to arrive with sufficient time to examine the building's interior and exterior at your own pace.

The south wall features decorative stone supports carved with human figures and animals that hold up the roof's edge molding. Look closely at the bearded and mustached men among these carvings, which offer a rare glimpse of medieval craftsmen adding personality to functional details.
