Château de Belcastel

Château de Belcastel is a castle and art museum built on a massive rocky outcrop above the Aveyron River, featuring stone walls, towers, and defensive structures from different periods. The building displays architectural elements added over centuries, while its collection brings together modern and historical works under one roof.

The fortress began in the 9th century with a chapel and developed over centuries through various noble families. Architect Fernand Pouillon carried out a major restoration in 1970, saving the castle from decay.

The castle displays contemporary art collections alongside historical objects, with exhibitions reflecting local artistic movements and medieval traditions of the region. Visitors experience a mix of modern and traditional perspectives on cultural heritage here.

The castle welcomes visitors from April through October and offers guided tours covering the architecture and collections. When planning a visit, note that the location sits on a hilltop with stairs needed to explore the site.

The castle houses a gallery dedicated to architect Fernand Pouillon and his influential work in public housing design. His restoration methods here served as a model for preserving other medieval sites across the region.
