Château de Dio-et-Valquières

Château de Dio-et-Valquières is a medieval fortress built on a hilltop with a central keep, thick defensive walls, and battlements designed for protection. The construction displays the military architecture typical of the region with its characteristic fortification features.

The castle developed between the 11th and 14. centuries under the control of local noble families who monitored the surrounding valley. It served an important defensive role for the region during the medieval period.

The historical monument displays an educational model showing the architectural transformations of the castle from the 12th and 17th centuries to present day.

The site has been open to visitors since its restoration in the 1990s, allowing exploration of its interior spaces and walkways. Sturdy footwear is advisable since stairs and pathways are uneven throughout the structure.

The castle held a rare tax exemption from the 1600s that freed its owners from standard feudal duties and transfer fees. This unusual privilege reveals the political weight this property carried in its time.
