Abbaye d'Hamage, Benedictine abbey in Wandignies-Hamage, France
The abbey complex includes a 15-meter-wide cloister, stone buildings, and a large granary measuring over 15 meters in length and 10 meters in width.
Founded between 625 and 639 by Saint Gertrude after her husband's death, the abbey became the first monastic establishment in northern France.
Archaeological excavations since 1991 have revealed substantial remains of the medieval buildings, including foundations, walls, and architectural elements from different periods.
The current chapel maintains its 13th-century facade made of sandstone blocks and features a pointed arch doorway from the medieval construction.
In 877, a royal decree from Charles II divided the wine production from the abbey's vineyard among several religious institutions in the region.
