Abbaye de Basse-Fontaine, Premonstratensian abbey in Brienne-la-Vieille, France
Abbaye de Basse-Fontaine is a monastery situated on the right bank of the Aube River in the Champagne region, approximately two kilometers southwest of Brienne-le-Château. The compound preserves a restored southern cloister wing that reflects the medieval layout of the religious community.
The monastery was founded in 1143 by Gautier II, Count of Brienne, who invited monks from Beaulieu Abbey to settle near a spring in the Défaut forest. This establishment marked the creation of a new religious community in the rural Champagne landscape.
The Premonstratensian order dedicated their time to evangelization, pilgrim reception, parish administration, and study of sacred texts at this location.
The site is accessible through guided visits organized by a local association dedicated to the monastery. These tours provide opportunities to explore the grounds and learn about the heritage and natural surroundings.
In the 15th century, the monastery housed a venerated relic: a finger bone of John the Baptist that drew pilgrims from surrounding regions. This sacred object became a major draw, especially on the saint's feast day in June.
