Ferrières Abbey, Benedictine monastery in Ferrières-en-Gâtinais, France

Ferrières Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Ferrières-en-Gâtinais featuring Gothic architecture with an octagonal rotunda and a distinctive choir containing elements from the eleventh century. The site preserves partial walls, architectural fragments, and structural remains that speak to its former scale and importance.

The monastery was founded around 630 by Irish monk Columbanus and became an important seat of power in the Carolingian realm. In 879 it hosted the coronation of two Carolingian kings, marking its political significance in that era.

The abbey became known for the scholars who worked within its walls, collecting and sharing valuable manuscripts that shaped medieval knowledge. This scholarly tradition drew monks and students seeking to study and preserve written works.

The site is open for exploration during daylight hours, allowing visitors to examine the preserved stone remains and architectural details from various angles. Comfortable footwear and adequate time are recommended to view the ruins thoroughly.

The abbey church once had an unusual second nave on its left side that was destroyed in 1739 when the crossing tower collapsed. This architectural loss became a turning point, transforming how the space appeared and functioned.
