Abbaye de Moreaucourt

Abbaye de Moreaucourt is a medieval monastery whose stone walls, Gothic arches, and foundations reveal how the religious complex was once arranged. The remaining structures show the layout of different buildings that made up the monastic community.

Founded in 1146, the abbey experienced multiple destructions between 1455 and 1595 that changed its structure fundamentally. These periods of damage reflect turbulent times that affected the monastic community.

This was an important center for nuns following the Order of Fontevraud, a monastic community with its own spiritual practices and organizational patterns that shaped daily life here.

Tours of the site are arranged by the Les Amis de Moreaucourt association, making visits possible through organized groups. Planning ahead helps ensure you can access the location when you visit.

Archaeological digs from 1968 to 1991 brought the buried structures back to light after more than three centuries underground. This recovery of the lost buildings helped reveal how the monastery was originally laid out.
