Abbaye de Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre, Romanesque abbey in Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre, France.
Abbey of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre is a Romanesque structure standing on the right bank of the Gave de Pau river with typical architectural features of that period. The choir has a rectangular form, and the entire building is marked by characteristic rounded arch windows and stone arches.
The building was founded in 1022 by monks from Saint-Sever-de-Rustan. After an earthquake in 1661 caused significant damage, it underwent major reconstruction work between 1676 and 1681.
The monastery was an important stop for pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela on their spiritual journey. Visitors today can sense the spiritual atmosphere of a place where thousands of believers once passed through.
The site is accessible to visitors with guided tours showing the architectural features and religious artifacts on display. It is advisable to check opening times before visiting to plan your visit during the best hours for exploring the buildings.
The structure preserves remnants of its original Romanesque construction, including several apsidioles and parts of the southern transept wall. These surviving elements give visitors a direct look at the early medieval building technique and original design.
