Savigny Abbey, Benedictine monastery in Savigny, France
Savigny Abbey is a monastery near Lyon featuring remains of Romanesque architecture and stonework. Parts of the original structure are preserved and displayed in the local Musée Lapidaire.
The abbey was founded in 816 by Leidradus, a former bishop of Lyon who left his position to establish it. Royal approval of its lands came later in the 10th century from the king of Burgundy.
The site became a center where monastic reform was practiced and taught, drawing monks from across the region who followed strict religious rules.
The site is accessible by paths through the countryside and connects with other religious sites in the region. Visiting this place allows you to explore several monasteries across the area.
The abbey created a network of more than thirty daughter monasteries across Normandy, extending its influence far beyond the local area. This widespread network made it one of the most important religious institutions of its era.
