Batterie de Cornouaille, Military fortification in Roscanvel, France.

The Batterie de Cornouaille is a coastal fortification in Roscanvel with stone walls and artillery positions that command the entrance to Brest roadstead. The site stretches along the shoreline and uses the natural elevation of the terrain to overlook the waterway.

Construction of the fortification began in 1684 under Vauban, a renowned French military engineer. It replaced an earlier plan for a nearby island that faced insurmountable challenges from strong currents and rough seas.

The fortification shows how France protected its coast and remains a landmark in the local landscape. Visitors can still see the old stone structures and understand the strategic position overlooking the strait.

Visiting the site requires arranging access in advance with local heritage groups, as the fortification remains under state protection. Planning ahead and booking a guided visit will ensure you can explore the location properly.

A square watchtower from 1813 stands on the cliff edge with multiple levels including an underground chamber. This tower was added well after the initial construction and shows how the site was expanded during the Napoleonic period.
