Château de la Flachère

Château de la Flachère is a castle in Saint-Vérand built with brick and stone walls topped by slate roofs. Its interior rooms feature decorative details that reflect the careful reconstruction work done in the 1860s.

The castle began as a headquarters for the Knights of Malta in the 13th century. It underwent major reconstruction between 1863 and 1869 under architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.

The grand staircase and main rooms show how French nobility lived during the 19th century through their carefully designed spaces. These protected elements reveal the daily habits and tastes of the aristocratic residents.

The best way to experience the place is on foot, as the surrounding grounds invite walking and exploring at a relaxed pace. Plan to spend time wandering through the exterior areas and gardens to get a full sense of the estate.

The park was designed by Varey and includes rare tree species not commonly found in the region. A sophisticated water system runs through the grounds and continues to supply the estate today.
