Château d'Ancenis, Medieval castle in Ancenis, France

The castle stands on the Loire River bank, featuring a Renaissance residence and a fortified entrance with defensive structures dating from various periods.

Established in 984 by Aremburga of Ancenis, the fortress underwent multiple sieges and transformations, including partial demolition ordered by Charles VIII in 1488.

The Renaissance residence, built in 1529, displays Gothic structural elements combined with First Renaissance decorative elements on its courtyard facade.

The castle park remains open daily from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, while the Renaissance building hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

The entrance complex incorporates a specialized defense system with a drawbridge arranged in a chicane pattern and an arched gallery fitted with a portcullis.
