Château d'Anterroches

Château d'Anterroches is a medieval fortress featuring a rectangular central keep with defensive projections, round towers, and thick walls topped with slate roofs. The structure sits prominently at the valley entrance above Murat.

The castle originated in the 13th century as a fortified farm, then gained its main tower during the 15th century. This expansion marked a shift toward stronger military defense for the region.

The castle takes its name from a family who adopted it after acquiring the property and became part of local heritage. The name remains connected to the area's identity today.

The castle is located at Murat's entrance and is clearly visible from the road when arriving from Laveissière. You can admire the exterior structure, but the interior is not open to visitors.

One of the family ancestors served as physician to King Louis XI, linking the lineage to the French court. This connection elevated the family's standing in the region.
